Sammy Mays

May 7, 1945 - November 4, 2021

Sammy Mays was born May 7, 1945, to Willie Ann and Lorenza Mays in Kilmichael, Mississippi. He attended school at Mt. Zion High School and Montgomery County Vocational High School. As a young man, he moved to Chicago, Illinois. In the early 1970’s, Sammy moved to Nassau County, New York where he resided for more than 20 years. He returned to Mississippi in the mid-1990’s to care for his aging parents. He was very dedicated to caring for his parents and his uncles in their later years. Sammy remained in Mississippi for the rest of his life. During his lifetime, he was first married to Rosanna Applewhite; then to Teola Young (deceased); and finally, to Martha Mosely (deceased). He is the father of seven (7) children: Delores Mays (Brian), Nancy Mays (deceased), Sammy Mays, Jr., (Akilah); Dion Allen (deceased), LaToya Allen, LaVelle Allen and Branden Foster (Annie). He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Vergie Brooks and Shirley Edwards; a brother, Lorenza, Jr.; a daughter, Nancy; and a son, Dion. He is survived by two sisters, Gwendolyn and Marilyn Mays, a brother, G.W. Edwards, six (6) nieces and nephews and a host of grand and great grandchildren.
